Is Truxton haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed anecdotal. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Truxton is the town founded on a dam that never came — the newest settlement on Route 66, born in 1951 when Clyde McCune and Donald Dilts built a garage and café at the head of Crozier Canyon because they'd heard the Bridge Canyon Dam was coming to the Colorado. The dam was never built. The town stayed anyway, living off the Mother Road: motels, service stations, the Frontier Motel and Café, strung along the longest unbroken stretch of Route 66 still drivable.

The name predates the town by nearly a century — Lieutenant Edward Beale found the spring in 1857 while surveying his wagon road with the famous camel corps, and named it for his son Truxtun (the railroad later dropped a letter). The Atlantic & Pacific put a siding and water tank there in the 1880s; Route 66 paved over Beale's trace in 1926. When Interstate 40 bypassed the stretch in 1978, Truxton became what the Mother Road made of so many towns: a shell of open and closed businesses facing the empty highway.

The file keeps Truxton: Beale's camels, the dam that wasn't, the Frontier Motel's neon, and the newest ghost town on Route 66 — a town younger than the highway that killed it.

Truxton is the archive's Route 66 file — the dam bet of 1951, the I-40 bypass, and the town that's still half-open on the longest stretch.

Why this file matters

Truxton is the archive's Route 66 file — the town founded for a dam that never came, kept alive by the Mother Road, then bypassed by I-40.

A town born in 1951 keeps its neon — the file's suggestion being that Truxton's hold is the timing: built late enough to skip the pioneers, it lived entirely on the road and died the day the road moved.
