The record — long form

Two Rivers is the last antebellum mansion Nashville built — David McGavock's 1859 Italianate for his cousin Willie Harding, who'd inherited the eleven-hundred-acre plantation between the Stones and Cumberland rivers. Built on the eve of the war and not finished until the seventies, the McGavocks held it three generations until 1965 — the last of the great country houses, with the 1802 Federal brick that was the property's first house still standing behind it.

The land was Andrew Jackson's once — part of the Hunter's Hill tract before the Hermitage — and the plantation ran on the enslaved labor the tour now names. Metro bought it for the schools and the golf course and the water park; the mansion and the fourteen acres around it are what's left of the thousand-acre world, the Friends of Two Rivers running the tours that tell the whole story — the enslaved who built it included.

The file keeps Two Rivers: the Harding-McGavock marriage, the 1859 Italianate, the 1802 house, and the plantation that's now a city park.

Two Rivers is the archive's antebellum file — the last mansion Nashville built and the park it became.

Why this file matters

Two Rivers is the archive's antebellum file — the 1859 mansion and the plantation the city absorbed.

A mansion on a golf course keeps its 1802 house — the file's suggestion being that Two Rivers' hold is the layering: the Jackson land, the slave-built Italianate, and the fourteen acres of the plantation that the twentieth century turned into the park.
