The record — long form

Fort Adams is the largest coastal fortification ever built in the United States, and it was built for a war that never came to Newport. Construction began in 1824 under the third-system program directed by the French engineer Simon Bernard, and the work ran more than three decades before the fort's walls, casemates, and listening tunnels were essentially complete in 1857. Named for President John Adams, it guarded the East Passage of Narragansett Bay through the Civil War, both World Wars, and into the 1950s, and the 1873 commander's house on the parade served President Eisenhower as a summer White House in 1958 and 1960. The state took it over in 1965, and it stands today as a National Historic Landmark open for guided tours.

The scale is the point: more than six acres inside the walls, with some of the most complex defensive tunnels in the country beneath them.

The paranormal program

The haunting at Fort Adams is unusual in that the operator itself keeps the rumors in circulation — the Fort Adams Trust runs evening paranormal-investigation sessions, advertising 'the stories that have inspired the rumors' without asserting them as fact. Which is the honest posture for the file. Soldiers did die at the post across a century and a half of garrison duty, and the tunnel system produces its own testimony of dark and echo, but the dossier holds no specific claim with a named witness attached.

The report stands as unverified by the site's own description. What visitors take home from the investigations is theirs to evaluate; what the archive records is that America's largest coastal fortress now sells tickets to search its casemates for what the daylight tour doesn't explain.
