Is Belcourt of Newport haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed reported experience. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Belcourt is the castle that kept its ghosts — Richard Morris Hunt's 1894 Louis XIII hunting lodge for Oliver Belmont, sixty rooms built for a man who cared more about his horses than his guests, the stables taking up the whole first floor. Alva Vanderbilt got it as a wedding gift in 1896 and made it a proper Newport palace; the Tinneys bought it for twenty-five thousand in 1957 and filled it with the antiques the other mansions were throwing out.

The ghosts came with the furniture — Harle Tinney's book about the monk on the stairs, the screaming suit of armor, the chairs that ejected sitters, the workman buried in the foundation. The most haunted house in Newport for half a century, saved from demolition by the family who catalogued its spirits, and restored by the Alex & Ani founder who bought it in 2012 — the Gilded Age castle that kept its ghosts through every owner.

The file keeps Belcourt: the 1894 Hunt design, Alva's remake, the Tinney collection and its ghosts, and the restoration that kept them.

Belcourt is the archive's haunted-mansion file — the castle that came with the furniture and the ghosts.

Why this file matters

Belcourt is the archive's haunted-mansion file — the 1894 Hunt castle and its documented ghosts.

A mansion full of haunted antiques keeps its monk — the file's suggestion being that Belcourt's hold is the collection: the Tinneys' furniture that brought its spirits, and the house that was Newport's most haunted because everything in it was haunted.

The record of claims

Reported experienceMultiple Phenomena

Harle Tinney recounted a robed apparition and sounds from armor. Belcourt of Newport wears the claim the way old houses do: visibly, and without comment. The claim rests on experience rather than evidence, and the file says so. The account appears in 'Haunted Spots in Newport'. The pattern of small anomalies is itself the claim — none dramatic alone, persistent together.
