Is General Stanton Inn haunted?
The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed reported experience. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.
The record — long form
The General Stanton Inn stands on Charlestown land the Narragansett granted Thomas Stanton in the 1650s for negotiating the return of a kidnapped Niantic girl from Block Island. His grandson Joseph Stanton II built the inn in 1740 beside a circa-1667 dwelling that became a school for Native children — the 'Indian Room' survives in the building — and the family's telling runs through nearly every Rhode Island era since: Sons of Liberty meetings and a Washington spy-ring tradition in the Revolution, an Underground Railroad stop in the 1840s, an illegal gambling room with a retractable roulette wheel, Prohibition rumrunner patronage.
The inn counts four presidential visits in its own history and reopened as a restaurant and tavern in 2022 under its sixth owners.
Filed as reported
Rhode Island Monthly's haunted-places survey records what interviewed staff describe — voices, footsteps after hours, objects that move, cold areas. Regional haunted-travel writeups name the resident presence 'the General,' a male apparition said to favor the second floor and to have once escalated from tapping a workman's shoulder to throwing an object when ignored; the inn appeared on Ghost Hunters in October 2007.
None of it is more than testimony, and the dossier says so: the file holds a documented 1740 inn and a steady modern stream of reported experience, with confidence figures describing attribution rather than the afterlife.
The record of claims
Interviewed staff describe voices, footsteps, moving objects and cold areas. The Charlestown hotel's reports are the kind old lodgings accumulate — footsteps after hours, presences in rooms, the house working the night shift. It's a reported experience — real to the people who had it, unresolved for everyone else. '16 Real-Life Haunted Places in Rhode Island' carries the account. Small phenomena, steadily reported: the file's most honest kind of haunting.
