The record — long form

Fort Massachusetts stands on Ship Island — the Gulf barrier island off Mississippi's coast, where the fort authorized in 1857 was completed in 1866 using paid labor and prisoners of war. Union forces held the island through the Civil War and used the fort to confine prisoners — a fortress built partly by the captured, holding more of them.

The file's spine is the island's isolation: a fort on a barrier island, built with prisoner labor, guarding a coast that changed hands in the war's first year.

The island's prisoners

Regional retellings describe apparitions of soldiers and prisoners on Ship Island and within the fort — the file's ghosts being the garrison and the confined, on an island where the distinction was the wall between them. The reports date to the twentieth century — the fort's dead still reportedly on the island that held them.

The prisoner-built prison is the file's darkest register — a fort constructed partly by the men it would hold, the island's isolation making the labor and the confinement the same condition.

Why this file matters

Fort Massachusetts is the archive's barrier-island file — a fort built partly by POWs, used to hold POWs, on an island whose isolation was the design. The apparitions on the island are the lore; the prisoner-built walls are the record.

A fort on an island, built by the confined, holding the confined — the file's suggestion being that Ship Island's garrison and its prisoners were never fully separated by the walls between them.

Local folklore

Regional retellings describe apparitions of soldiers and prisoners on Ship Island and within the fort. Reports in the file date to 20th century. The fort's documented violence is the soil the reports grow in — Gulfport, Mississippi keeps both on file. It survives as local folklore, which is to say it survives because people keep telling it. Sources including 'Mississippi haunted places listicle' keep the claim in circulation. As folklore it's unkillable: the story is too good, and the place too fitting, to let go.
