No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.

The record — long form

The Scott Township Gist site is the second settlement — the 1819 tract in Brown County, the other half of the Virginia freedmen's land. The lots were the division — the parcels named for the first owners, the school and the church that served them. The fading was the same — the remote soil that couldn't hold, the families who left for better.

The marker is the memory — the 2012 erection, the descendants' foundation that placed it. The federal troops were the escort — the 1815 arrival that was protected, the largest manumission in the state's history. The Scott Township site is the vanished — the settlement that's mostly gone, the names that are on the marker now.

The file keeps the Scott Township Gist: the 1819 purchase, the lot names, the decline, and the marker.

The Scott Township Gist is the archive's Brown County file — the second freedmen's tract.

Why this file matters

The Scott Township Gist is the archive's Brown County file — the other half of Gist's bequest.

A tract keeps its names — the file's suggestion being that Scott Township's hold is the marker: the lot owners who are remembered, the settlement that faded, and the will that freed them.
