The record — long form

The inn was built in 1788 in the village of Proctorsville as a stagecoach stop — one room for men, one for women, a chamber pot behind a screen — and took travelers for decades before becoming a private house. The Reverend Warren Skinner, a Universalist minister, added the broad common rooms and barn in the mid-1800s and raised his family there; descendants who summered at the property included Broadway actor Otis Skinner and his daughter, author Cornelia Otis Skinner. The inn's own history files it as a reported Underground Railroad stop during Skinner's tenure, and it has operated as a bed-and-breakfast since the mid-1960s.

What's reported

The innkeepers' own accounting, collected across multiple owners, keeps a small roster: a woman seen endlessly brushing her hair in an upstairs window, and a cloaked, friendly man locals call George — an innkeeper's third-floor sighting of a traveler in an old-fashioned coat and hat is the clearest telling. Earlier keepers reported a figure walking in daylight through the kitchen and up the back stairs before vanishing; a photographer's shots kept developing with orbs. The most recent filings add a spectral cat crossing a guest's bed — though no cat lives at the inn, and one allergic guest's reaction is on the record.

The owners' house line is the file's posture verbatim: there is no proof the inn is haunted, and no proof it isn't — only two and a half centuries of hospitality, some of it apparently still on shift.
