Is Highland House haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed investigation claim. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Highland House on Highland Circle is Columbus's 'robber baron' mansion — a grand neoclassical brick house that contractor W.S. Lindamood built in 1909–10 directly on the loss of its predecessor. Early on the morning of May 5, 1909, fire caught in the kitchen ceiling beside a chimney flue of the elegant antebellum home where the Lindamoods were living; it burned to the ground, and Lindamood pulled down the ruins and built the present house, among the largest neoclassical residences in north Mississippi. A second fire in 1919 reached only the roof and was extinguished.

The legend that walks alongside the documented fire is the arsonist's: local telling attributes the 1909 blaze to a housekeeper in love with Lindamood, turned away — a story the Convention and Visitors Bureau's driving-tour pamphlet repeats, and the newspaper's fire history does not.

What the file records

The haunting claim is an investigation claim: Columbus's ghost-tour coverage notes that electronic voice phenomenon recordings have been captured in the house and played for tourgoers, and a paranormal team worked there in the mid-1990s. Reader-submitted accounts add a piano that plays itself, cherry-cigar smoke, dolls that move, and a frightening basement — anecdote, filed as such.

What stands documented is a house twice-survived: built on a fire's footprint, burned again, and still commanding its circle.
