The record — long form

The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse was designed by the man who would later win the Battle of Gettysburg — Lieutenant George Gordon Meade of the Army Corps of Topographic Engineers picked the site and drew the plans in 1854, nine years before he met Lee in Pennsylvania. Building it took six years and a war: the Third Seminole War broke out in 1855 while the first construction crew was en route, and work didn't resume until 1859, through malaria, mosquitoes, and an inlet that kept closing itself off.

The tower that finally lit on July 10, 1860 was built to survive — a double-walled brick design that has since outlasted the Civil War, every hurricane that's hit the coast, and an earthquake. The site had been a meeting place for the Jobe and Tequesta peoples for thousands of years before it was a lighthouse reservation, and the Seminoles who survived the war camped and traded with the keepers for decades afterward — the lighthouse stood on ground that was already old when Meade surveyed it.

The reservation turned out to be twice as big as anyone thought — a 1925 survey found the original 61.5 acres were actually 122 — and it accumulated its own history: a Navy wireless station in 1905, a U-boat watch post in World War II, and eventually the museum that now runs the tower. It's the only thing on the Jupiter Inlet that's been there longer than the inlet has been stable.

Why this file matters

Jupiter Inlet is the archive's pre-Gettysburg file — a lighthouse designed by the future victor of Gettysburg, built through a Seminole war, standing on a meeting place thousands of years older than the country it serves.

A lighthouse designed by a Gettysburg general keeps its light — the file's suggestion being that Meade's first famous victory was simply building the thing at all.

Work was interrupted from 1856 to 1858 by the Third Seminole War. The lighthouse was completed under the supervision of Captain Edward A. Yorke in 1860 at a cost of more than
