The record — long form

Montauk Point is the lighthouse Washington commissioned — the 1796 sandstone tower on Turtle Hill at the eastern tip of Long Island, the first lighthouse in New York and the landfall light for every ship coming into New York from Europe. The Second Congress authorized it; Jefferson signed the survey; McComb built it with 50 men in five months.

The site was chosen for erosion — L'Hommedieu picked the plateau 297 feet back from the edge because the bank was already washing away. The lighthouse was the nation's most important seacoast light for its first eighty years — the beacon that marked the approach to the port that was becoming the country's door.

The tower is still the landmark — the oldest working lighthouse in New York, the National Historic Landmark, the revetment the Army Corps built to keep the Atlantic from taking the hill. The file keeps the first light's endurance: the 1796 tower, the landfall light for the immigrant ships, and the sandstone that's been holding the point for two and a half centuries.

Montauk Point is the archive's landfall file — the 1796 lighthouse Washington authorized, the beacon for every ship bound for New York, and the tower the Army Corps had to armor against the sea.

Why this file matters

Montauk is the archive's first-light file — New York's first lighthouse, the landfall light for the country's biggest port, and the tower that's still working after 230 years.

A lighthouse that watched the immigrants keeps its beam — the file's suggestion being that Montauk's hold is the arrivals: the ships that saw it first, the port it marked, and the sandstone tower that's still the first thing America shows the Atlantic.
