No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.

The record — long form

River Junction was a Johnson County settlement west of Lone Tree that died the quiet way Iowa hamlets die — slowly absorbed back into farmland. What it left behind is unusual: a three-acre grove that early settler Henry Walker donated for the use of 'the Old Settlers of Johnson County,' adjoining the site of the former River Junction Methodist Chapel, and a pair of commemorative buildings that outlasted the town around them.

Documented history

In 1912 the community raised the Henry Walker Memorial Building, a concrete-block hall paid for by public subscription — the county account says 'public conscription' — to house artifacts of the pioneer era. A replica log cabin followed in 1916, erected south of the memorial as 'a rustic monument to pioneer days'; the archive notes it is a replica, not an original homestead. Annual Old Settlers picnics kept the grove in use for decades.

As the founding generation passed, the organization waned and the park was deeded to the Johnson County Conservation Board in 1971; the park and memorial building were nominated to the National Register in June 2001. Walker Park remains publicly managed and hosts spring and fall festivals, though the wider townsite's access is mixed — and sources disagree on its distance from Lone Tree, which the record leaves unset.

Documented history

  • Former settlement west of Lone Tree; Walker Park preserves a 1912 memorial building and a 1916 replica cabin. A ghost town's file is unusual: the emptiness itself is documented, and this entry is part of that record. The record holds it as fact — documented, not retold. The record appears in 'Walker Park'. It anchors the timeline the rest of the file hangs from.
