Is Schrier House / Morgan City Archives haunted?

The record holds 1 claim, 1 legend — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed local folklore. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Morgan City's archives grew out of a 1979 library local-history project and the lifetime collecting of Lela Lehmann, who had been gathering city artifacts since the 1930s. In 2001 the collection moved into the three-story Leah Norman Schreier Center — the Schreier family being among the city's more prominent business names, with interests in banking, oil, real estate, and civic life documented today in family papers at Tulane.

The holdings read like a city turned sideways: a Revolutionary War soldier's discharge signed by George Washington, a letter signed by Mark Twain, council minutes back to the town's Brashear City days, cemetery records, synagogue memorial boards, Black church records from the 1860s — and a black doctor's bag belonging to Dr. Thomas Dreher, the man hanged beside Ada LeBoeuf in Louisiana's 1929 execution case. In recent years the archives consolidated into a single-level, climate-controlled building at 506 First Street.

Haunted headquarters

The Cajun Coast visitors guide recounts apparition reports in the old archives building, and the claim got a television season: when the Travel Channel's Ghosts of Morgan City set up headquarters inside the archives in 2019, an alarm tripped in the building became the finale episode's case — 'Haunted Headquarters' — with investigators digging into the house's own history.

Nothing in the file rises above reported experience, and the dossier treats it that way. The more solid curiosity is archival: a building full of a city's paper memory — including the murder case that produced Morgan City's most famous ghost legend — collecting its own apparition reports seemed almost inevitable.

The record of claims

Local folkloreHaunting

The Cajun Coast guide recounts apparition reports. The house's rooms are where the accounts concentrate — old houses keep their stories in the walls they were built around. It circulates as local folklore — the kind communities keep rather than verify. Sources including 'Cajun Coast Visitors Guide 2020–2021: Ghosts of the Coast' keep the claim in circulation. The haunting claim is now part of the site's identity, filed alongside the documented history.

Local folklore

The Cajun Coast guide recounts apparition reports. The house's rooms are where the accounts concentrate — old houses keep their stories in the walls they were built around. Local lore carries the account; no documentation has ever caught up with it. The account appears in 'Cajun Coast Visitors Guide 2020–2021: Ghosts of the Coast'. As folklore it's unkillable: the story is too good, and the place too fitting, to let go.
