Is Seul Choix Point Lighthouse haunted?

The record holds 1 claim, 1 legend, 1 named entity — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed local folklore. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

French voyageurs named the point for what it was: seul choix, the only choice — the one sheltered anchorage along a forbidding stretch of Lake Michigan's Upper Peninsula shore. The lighthouse the government raised there in 1895 still stands above Gulliver, in Schoolcraft County, now a museum run by the local historical society. It also bills itself, without much competition, as the most haunted lighthouse on the Great Lakes.

The haunting is attached to a particular man. Captain Joseph Willie Townsend — Capt. Willie — was appointed second head keeper in 1902 and served until he died in the upstairs bedroom in 1910. Winter closed in before the family could bury him; the body was embalmed in the lighthouse cellar, where by the accounts it lay for three weeks before burial, laid in state in the parlor.

The keeper who stayed

The reports cluster where Townsend lived. His wife Ruth never allowed him to smoke indoors — he had to take his cigars outside — and the smell of cigar smoke is now the lighthouse's signature phenomenon, reported by visitors and staff in the living quarters where no one smokes. Docents describe it as the captain finally smoking wherever he pleases.

The rest of the inventory reads like a poltergeist's shift report: figures peering from mirrors, sudden cold spots, footsteps in empty rooms, doors opening, silverware and plates found moved, a table turned, chairs rearranged, cigars migrated from one room to another, bedcovers disturbed in the upstairs bedroom where he died. During one media taping, the historical society's president said, an image of Townsend appeared. Pure Michigan — the state's official tourism agency — carries the reports as documented strange activity, which is the most official imprimatur a ghost story can earn.

The file's reading

Nothing about Townsend's residency is legend: the appointment, the bedroom, the winter embalming are the record. The cigar smoke and the mirror figure are the claim — retold, unverified, and by now load-bearing. The archive keeps the file the way the museum keeps the light: one keeper on duty, in some sense, since 1902.

The record of claims

Reports describe apparitions, displaced objects and cigar odors. Witnesses name it Willie Townsend; the name travels further than the proof. The vessel's reports concentrate where the work was hardest — ships and lights keep their own roll call. The claim is neighborhood knowledge — retold locally, verified nowhere. Sources including 'A Look at 6 Haunted Places in Michigan' keep the claim in circulation. The sounds are the site's most consistent claim — the one detail witnesses agree on.

Local folklore

Reports describe apparitions, displaced objects and cigar odors. The vessel's reports concentrate where the work was hardest — ships and lights keep their own roll call. Local lore carries the account; no documentation has ever caught up with it. The retelling is the record now — the legend metabolized the facts long ago.
