The record — long form
The Blue Ox has been the same room doing different jobs since 1887. The frame building on Highway 57 in Baileys Harbor began as a general store, spent time as a butcher shop and a residence, and has been a roadhouse bar under one ownership — twins Joe and Jerry Kwaterski — since 1975. The brothers spent four decades filling it with Door County artifacts: farm equipment, taxidermy, toys, newspapers, and the horse saddles that serve as bar stools, most of it donated by the peninsula's founding families. It is less a themed bar than an attic that serves beer.
The resident
Wisconsin Tourism's Door County ghost roundup files the one claim: the apparition of a former butcher, attributed to the building's butcher-shop years. The lore gives him no name and no incident — just a trade and a building he is said not to have left.
That is the whole paranormal file, and the dossier keeps it that size. What the record supports is the setting that produces such stories: a 130-year-old room that has fed, housed, and provisioned generations of the same community, curated into a museum of itself by owners who never threw anything out. The butcher, reported rather than proven, is filed as the building's longest-tenured employee.
