Is Pottawatomie Lighthouse haunted?

The record holds 1 claim, 1 legend, 1 named entity — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed local folklore. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Pottawatomie is the grandfather of Door County's lighthouses — the light Congress funded in 1834 after thirty Detroit merchants called Rock Island Passage the point most imperiously requiring one, built in 1836 before Wisconsin was a territory, and rebuilt in 1858 when the first tower failed. It was the first lighthouse on Wisconsin's Lake Michigan shore, named for the people whose own name means 'keepers of the fire.'

The light stood a hundred thirty-seven feet over the lake on the island's north bluff — the highest on the inland lakes, visible twenty miles — marking the passage between Green Bay and the big lake that the steamships took before the railroads came. The Coast Guard automated it; the state park keeps the island; the 1858 building is the oldest lighthouse in the Ninth District.

The file keeps Pottawatomie: the 1836 first light, the keepers-of-the-fire name, the 1858 rebuilding, and the island at the top of Door County where Wisconsin's lights began.

Pottawatomie is the archive's Rock Island file — the first Wisconsin lighthouse and the bluff that watched the passage.

Why this file matters

Pottawatomie is the archive's Rock Island file — the 1836 light, the 1858 survivor, and the keepers-of-the-fire name.

A lighthouse named for its people keeps its bluff — the file's suggestion being that Pottawatomie's hold is the precedence: the first light on the Wisconsin shore, on the island where the channel is widest and the name was already about keeping fire.
